Reading Guide
This book is architecturally designed for three distinct reading requirements. Every chapter opens with a compact briefing under two fixed headings: What we discuss in this chapter states the central challenge, while Your leverage as a decision-maker outlines the practical consequence for your leadership. At the chapter end, the section What we discussed summarizes the core takeaways. In their entirety, these briefings and end summaries condense the book's complete chain of argumentation into a clear executive overview, while the chapter text supplies the rigorous justification.
Three Paths
Executive Board Path (approx. 45 minutes). Read the Executive Summary first, followed by the chapter briefings for Chapters 1 through 19 in their natural sequence. Next, position your organization using the diagnostic questions in Chapter 12. At the end of this path lie three concrete executive decisions: establish a baseline, select the scope, and clarify the compute location.
Strategy Path (approx. 3 hours). Begin by reading Part I in its entirety, delve into Chapter 5 as the core of the model, and review the briefings of the remaining theory chapters. Next, turn to the empirical evidence in Chapters 10 through 12 as well as the regulatory framework in Chapter 14. This is followed by the economic analyses and objections in Chapters 16 and 17. This path equips you with the necessary framework to thoroughly prepare a pivotal pilot decision and advocate effectively for it within executive leadership.
Full Path (approx. 2 days). This path invites you to read the entire book linearly from cover to cover. The Glossary in the appendix precisely defines every technical term and acronym. The bibliography transparently indicates which sources have been verified and incorporated versus those flagged for further verification. A second review of Chapter 11 is particularly recommended if you wish to mirror one of the four practical case studies directly onto your own industry.
A Living Document
This book is structured as a living document: the overarching argument remains stable, while supporting evidence and metrics are updated continuously as ongoing initiatives progress—the exact same discipline required of an organizational knowledge asset. In certain places, you will intentionally encounter provisional baseline values from proofs of concept and active rollouts; wherever a statement remains a working hypothesis, it is explicitly identified as such in the text.
